A gel that can help heal tooth decay

Recently in China, a team of scientists have developed a gel that can regrow tooth enamel. Tooth enamel is the hard, outer surface layer of your teeth that serves to protect against tooth decay. Usually, teeth enamel cannot grow back once it breaks or wears away due to its complicated structure covering the surface of a tooth. It is formed biologically and can therefore cannot be self-repaired, increasing the chances of cavities. However, with the new gel it is great because it is made of the same material as enamel, consisting of calcium and phosphate ions. https://www.intelligentliving.co/scientists-develop-gel-regrow-tooth-enamel/

New research has found ways to tell if your food is really grain free

Tests in the past have been able to detect if gluten is present in a food, but now with advanced detection kits, CSIRO have found a way to detect gluten in rye, which type of grain it is derived from, as well as how much gluten is present. This will be great help for not only food manufacturers to label their products correctly and efficiently, but also for consumers to trust what is on the packaging and the gluten-free claims. The new technology will become effective with helping track contamination in the supply chain, improve product quality and accuracy, food safety and meeting regulations. https://www.csiro.au/en/News/News-releases/2019/Catcher-of-the-rye

New self-driving scooter

The KickScooter T60 is a new self-driving scooter that was introduced in China to drive itself to a charging station. Most countries are falling behind with the new technology, having to gather their scooters around the town every night for them to be charged. However, this new idea prevents all that work as it uses AI to navigate its way back to the charging stations without a person. https://www.theverge.com/2019/8/16/20809002/segway-ninebot-electric-scooter-self-driving-uber-lyft-charging-station

Attaching Fitbits to Port Jackson Sharks to observe their behaviour

A group of scientists has just discovered how modern technology can be used to study sharks out in the open. The researchers wanted to gain an understanding of shark behaviour and their whereabouts in order to reduce the amount and risk of human-shark interactions. Now, Macquarie scientist Julianna Kadar has just found the best method of using tagging technology to do just that. The researchers gathered Port Jackson sharks from the wild and attached a Fitbit like device – acoustic accelerometers – on the sharks to monitor their movements. The data collected by this new technology has since confirmed new information about the breed. https://lighthouse.mq.edu.au/article/august-2019/fitbits-throw-light-on-secret-lives-of-sharks
